Langstone Gig Club has been recognised at the 2018 Havant Sports Association Awards.
The Gig Club was presented with a Team of the Year award in recognition of achieving success and performing at a consistently high level throughout 2017 and demonstrating fair play and a good sporting attitude over the year.
The nomination for the award cited an extraordinary year in the Gig Clubs short history having become the first ever Cornish Pilot Gig Club in Hampshire in 2013. During 2017 the Club had achieved its best ever set of results in the Gig World Championships held in the Isles of Scilly and finished third in the newly formed Jurassic League. This really placed Hayling Island on the map amongst more established teams from Weymouth, Lyme Regis, Portland, Poole, Swanage and Bridport. The icing on the cake was that the Club were invited to compete for the very first time in the prestigious Cornish County Championships which are seen as the pinnacle of the Gig rowing season. 2017 also saw the club host its own regatta and in another first in partnership with the Royal Navy, they hosted a Junior Sprint competition at Whale Island in Portsmouth Harbour bringing Gig Clubs up from Dorset and Devon to compete.
On top of all this the members found time to support local initiatives such as the Community Alcohol Partnership and to undertake litter picks and fund raising which saw over £400 being raised for Children in Need. As part of the award nomination the Gig Club was also able to demonstrate that it is committed to developing members, coaches, officials and volunteers.
Club Chairman Alan Robinson said “This recognition from amongst our peers in Havant really means a lot to us and caps what has been a very special year for our club!”
