Fowey 16th December 2017
Having had to be postponed from last weekend, due to local weather warnings, this Saturday saw Fowey Gig Club host a scaled back event, in the newly formed Restormel Winter League series, with fewer clubs & crews able to attend.
First race away was the Mixed Vets which saw Charlestown in the lead at the first mark, but they were overhauled by Mevagissey on the second mark, and that’s the positions they finished in, followed by two Fowey crews vying for 3rd place.
Next up were the Ladies with Fowey taking an early lead leaving Charlestown and Mevagissey to battle it out at the first mark. By the second mark Charlestown had clear water on them and on the last leg managed to gain more ground on the front runners but not enough to rob Fowey of their well-deserved win.
The Mens race looked more evenly matched at the start but, by the first mark, old age & treachery saw Mevagissey slip into the lead and gain their second victory of the day with Charlestown completing a hat trick of second places. Fowey fought back by winning the Mixed race and beat Meva into second place followed by a “mixed” crew with rowers from all 3 clubs filling in!
With the friendly atmosphere, shortened course which made for good spectating from Beryls Yard pontoon and the seasonal refreshments of mulled winea and mince pies provided by Fowey, it was an enjoyable start to the winter season which continues with the next scheduled event at Mevagissey on 20th January.
