Cornwall School Games – Watersports Day
GIG ROWING COMPETITION: Weds 28th June 2017
Gig Rowing will be included in the Cornwall School Games competition framework for the 7th year running in 2017.
Where: The event is to be held at Mylor Harbour
When: Wednesday 28th June approximately 10am – 4pm
Why: The competition gives schools a chance to compete against each other in Cornish Pilot Gigs. 1000 young people will compete in 30 finals in 6 different sports on the same day in Kayaking, Gig Rowing, Sailing Surfing/Bodyboarding, Surf Life Saving and Volleyball.
Who: The competition is ran in partnership between British Rowing and Cornwall Sports Partnership – with invaluable support from local clubs. 2017 contacts are Rhiannon Bailey (BR) and Rachel Knott (CSP).
How: Wooden gigs are loaned by local clubs (thank you!) each school must link to a local club who will need to provide a competent coxswain. Schools are responsible for following safeguarding guidelines. Each crew will race at least twice. Although races are short & the venue sheltered, this event is a competition and not a ‘taster session’ aimed at novices who have not rowed before.
Schools can enter teams in the following categories:
- Year 7-9 (any) – Can be all male, or a mix of male & female
- Year 7-9 (girls) – Must be all female
- Year 10+11 (any) – Can be all male, or a mix of male & female
- Year 10+11 (girls) – Must be all female
Pupils can row ‘up’ a category, but cannot row down. Pupils can’t row in 2 crews as they may be on the water at the same time, you will need one coxswain for each crew as they may be on the water at the same time.
Entries are made through schools, to the Cornwall Sports Partnership (via Rachel Knott) as part of the School Games entry system by the 12th May. Clubs have found that this is a great way to link to your local school and also build a strong junior section.
We rely on the good will of local clubs loaning boats, umpires and helpers on the day – if you would like to be involved in the 2017 competition we would love to hear from you!
