This series of events, run by Torridge Pilot Gig Club over the last few months, held its final races this past weekend. Well done to all those clubs which took part, particularly Boscastle & Crackington who were the overall winners.
Report on the final event’s racing from Stephen Lloyd:
The sun came out and so did the rowers on a sunny day in Appledore. This being the last in the winter series saw some fantastic rowing and some commanding wins.
First up was the Ladies B where Bristol took to the water and followed through with a convincing win, where the local clubs Torridge and Appledore completed the top three. In the Men’s B, again with a seriously strong win by Bristol again it was looking like other clubs had some head scratching to do. Boscastle took 2nd place with Appledore with some help from other clubs finished 3rd
The most competitive tables were the Vets. These two races starting with the Ladies had seen Bristol over the line first but with some non Vets in the boat Torridge took the Ladies Vets Title with a commanding win leaving Appledore and Ilfracombe to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Men’s Vets was always going to be the race of the day with Boscastle and Torridge neck and neck with 33 points each. With the water starting to run and after a second attempt to start, both Boscastle and Torridge exploded off the line. 20 strokes in and Torridge took control of the race and finished 1st to take the Men’s Vets title with a 30 boat length win over 2nd place Boscastle. Bristol finish 3rd to make the top three.
With a little break from the senior races the juniors where given the chance to see what they could do. Ilfracombe took a great win followed by Barnstaple and Torridge. Even though no point are awarded to the juniors, these guys are the future of gig rowing.
With a Sea Shanty deployed it was time for the big guns to go head to head. The Ladies A was up first with a fast Bristol taking the win over an impressive 2nd place to Appledore who have rowed fantastically over the series. Boscastle took 3rd.
The last race of the series was down the Men’s A. Bringing home their 4th Win of the day, Bristol won by eight boat lengths followed by Boscastle who have had a fantastic series. Torridge took 3rd over the 1.5nm course.
That was it…the end of the series.
It has been plenty of pleasure and pain at the same time on a personal note, but we at Torridge Pilot Gig Club hope all the clubs that came to race enjoyed the first ever North Coast Gig League. With the great response from all of the clubs and the request for another starting in the Autumn, we will ensure that new clubs will enjoy the excellent rowing that we all have been involved with.
Only three weeks til the WPGC, so see you all on the Islands and have a great championships!
