Poole Gig Rowing Club launched their wooden gig ‘Isabelle’ on 17th September. She has been re-painted in club colours and had her naming ceremony with all the usual traditions and champagne. They also took the opportunity to have a fun day on the water with all their gigs out together with other boats.
Phil Oldroyd from the club said “As part of the fun we had organised to row and escort the tall ship ‘Lord Nelson’ out of Poole Harbour from the quay. So we took the opportunity to also follow the old traditions and deliver the pilot to the ship whilst departing. We also managed to disembark the pilot from the ship before she left the harbour. We learnt how difficult it can be to keep pace with a ship of this size and get up close to allow the pilot to transfer. This was a great honour to perform this transfer in association with the Lord Nelson and the Jubilee Sailing Trust. A great day was had by all, along with those from other gig clubs that attended on the day.”
