On the 4th April, 18 young people took to the water in Plymouth for a day of skill development ran by coach Kevin Sellar. The day was organised as part of Kevins ‘Satellite clubs’ project, which aims to develop links between schools and clubs in Cornwall & Devon.
The young people aged 11-16, along with their coaches came from 4 clubs: Rock, Bude, Caradon & Barnstaple. Each person got the chance to work on their skills in a gig, as well as try out rowing in sliding seat single (virus), quads and fours. Their coaches were able to work on their skills using coaching cards.
Kevin currently supports 20 clubs across Cornwall and Devon and can assist with making links with schools, indoor rowing & water coaching advice. This is a joint project delivered in partnership with Plymouth SSP and British Rowing. Kev also runs the highly successful indoor rowing school games events in Cornwall & Devon.
On June 29th Kevin organises the 6th Cornwall School Games Gig Rowing competition as part of the Cornwall Watersports Games at Mylor Harbour. Schools can link with local clubs to enter teams of 6 in four categories. Schools must have an experienced coxswain from their local club. Clubs have found that this is a great way to strengthen links with their local schools and develop their junior sections.
