Junior rowers from Looe Rowing Club have been learning from the best, as Olympic silver medallist Annie Vernon visited the club recently.
The club is involved in the Sportivate project, which aims to get young people into sport, and has been offering learn to row courses for four years.
Annie, born in Cornwall, visited learner rowers from Liskeard Community School on Wednesday 15 July. She was also due to meet Looe Rowing Club’s junior squad on Monday 27 July, but the visit has been postponed due to the weather conditions.
During her visit to the Liskeard juniors, she spent time talking to the youngsters about their experience learning to row and hearing about how much they were enjoying the sport.
James Chudleigh, Looe Rowing Club chairman, said: ‘We were very fortunate to have Annie visit our club. Our young rowers really enjoyed meeting her and she was very inspiring. Our learn to row programme has been very successful over the years and we’ve seen an increase in our membership as a result, so to have an Olympic rower recognise our efforts in promoting the sport is a real accolade. We’re looking forward to seeing what other doors may open in the future for our gig club.’
