A lack of gigs on loan to run the Under 16’s County Championships next weekend at Newquay threatens to spoil the event for the next generation of pilot gig rowers, according the CPGA.
Anne Curnow Care has written to all club secretaries in a plea for more gigs to be loaned for the event. In her email she writes:
I write with some degree of annoyance that for the coming U16 championships we are struggling to get 6 like gigs.
As you know all clubs are asked to loan a gig for championships if they want to take part. Whilst we understand that towing can be an issue, Newquay will endeavour to collect gigs where possible, but by not offering a loan or loaning only your very oldest gig that is your training gig it is becoming increasingly difficult to run this championship.
The upcoming championship sees the future of the sport racing and surely we should all be doing our best to encourage them, as it currently stands we don’t have the 6 gigs needed unless they are a complete mismatch.
We are now looking at clubs who are not even entering a junior crew and asking them to loan, this really should not be the case – there are 18 clubs entered for the U16 – surely 6 boats can be secured from that group?
If your club is attending and wishes to change its loan boat then please let us know asap.
If your club is not attending but is happy to loan a boat to enable the future of the sport to have like boats, please get in contact asap.
Thank you to those who have already agreed a loan boat and will be getting it to Newquay on Sunday – Coverack (Lark), Newquay + CRAB (Hope + Dall Lewyer).
Boats are also required to be loaned for the Senior County Championships in September. Contact the CPGA via [email protected] if you can help.
