Report from Penryn following last Friday’s Race.
Firstly, thank you all for attending, participating, supporting and assisting with the new format GFR – and commiserations to those who were unable to compete due to other commitments, illness and weather – you missed a great event.
We were racing this year for the prestigious Good Friday Race Trophy kindly sponsored by the King Harry Ferry Co Ltd. As it is a Pursuit Race, the trophy is awarded to the first crew to cross the finish line, but following the full risk assessment which was undertaken prior to the event the decision was made that on safety grounds GRP gigs would have to be started after the wooden gigs, so their times had to be adjusted. All the other craft handicaps were taken into account in their start times.
Sadly the first crew across the line had been disqualified for going up the wrong bank (fortunately there was no collision with craft still coming down).
The second and third crews home were, embarrassingly, both from Penryn RC, and contained the handicapper. A quick committee meeting was held on the finish line at which it was agreed that the trophy would go to the next boat home on adjusted time – so many congratulations to Newquay Ladies A in GRP gig Sophia Storm.
