Talk on the history of Gig Rowing

1013 0

Today saw an informative and stimulating talk at the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall, from Pilot Gig World Champion Mel Williams, entitled Rowing, Racing and Revival.

Mel talked with such enthusiasm about the history of the sport that those who don’t already gig row will surely be knocking on the door of a local gig club tomorrow!

It was an excellent promotion of our sport, highlighting it’s positive impact on our communities and it’s development in recent years which has seen participation beyond Cornwall and even abroad. Her lecture covered topics from the traditional use of gigs through to their modern day revival.

Mel is currently taking a break from rowing gigs due to a house move and other family commitments but leads fitness classes for gig rowers in the Falmouth area. Contact her via her Twitter name @LadyKilligrew if you’d like details.
