This weekend there are two opportunities to support and develop the future of Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing:

Looe Regatta – Sat 3rd August has a ‘Sportivate Challenge’ for crews aged 14-25 year olds. The aim of this is to promote and celebrate the Sport England ‘Sportivate‘ programme which is all about getting young people involved in Sport and Physical activity. Crews must be aged 14-25 year old, with no A crew rowers. There will be t shirts for all rowers, as well as medals for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a perpetual trophy all sponsored by Cornwall Sports Partnership (CSP). There will be a rep from the CSP at Looe on the day to talk to clubs about accessing Sportivate funding.

Under 16s County Gig Championships – Sun 4th August. There are 24 crews entered in the 2013 County Championships, last year won by Cadgwith Gig Club . The coxswains meeting is at 9.30am at Newquay Rowing Club. Please check out the links below for the race order, draw and car parking information.

I find it crazy that Newquay under 16 championships are still being run today despite a horrendous forecast of heavy rain all day. There is even strong offshore winds predicted. These kids are the future of the sport, one that’s supposed to be fun, yet they are going to be made to get soaked and stand around for the best part of 8 hours. Not sure that’s the best way to encourage young talent into our sport. I seriously hope common sense reign’s and someone rethinks the go decision.

I take it all back…. the conditions were v wet but sea was ok. The youngsters loved every minute. a couple of pull outs but still a good showing. Hard competition too – 4 rows in a day. Small heats (3-4 teams) did mean a lot of waiting around. Well done to every team who rowed.
