The wait is finally over, the 2012 World Pilot Gig Championships has arrived.
The racing kicks off tonight with the Ladies and Mens Veterans and SuperVetrans races. It’s been a beautiful day so far here on Scilly. Rowers have been arriving throughout the day, greeted by a decent scattering of blue skies and stunning Spring sunshine.
The beach is starting to fill up gigs, rowers and supporters. Crews have been out on the water through the day, testing the conditions and making last minute adjustments. The wind is beginning to freshen up but the sea remains nice and calm.
The first race of the weekend is the Ladies Vets race, won last year by one of the Island crews. Lookout for another strong local showing with stiff competition from the likes of Helford, Falmouth, Flushing & Mylor, Devoran and Rock.
Next up are the men in what could be one of the top races of the weekend. Last year the men’s race was again won by an island crew but was closely fought right down the course. Expectations are high and crews from Caradon, Flushing & Mylor, Mounts Bay and Roseland are likely to be right in the mix.
