Thursday morning out on Scilly and the wait is nearly over…
It all begins tomorrow evening with the Vets racing when the months of long, hard training are finally put to the test out on the unforgiving island waters.
Yesterday’s sub-tropical heat wave has passed and there’s a chill in the air on St Mary’s this morning. The wind is still light and conditions look relatively calm but our friends on the island are predicting choppy conditions, with wind on top of tide, for Saturday’s racing.
The Strand is lined with gigs and the streets are slowly filling up with rowers, supporters and some confused looking tourists.
As ever, the welcome from the Scilly community has been nothing short of fantastic with smiling faces greeting rowers in the shops, cafes and pubs.
The roller coaster is about to begin. There’s guaranteed to be highs and lows for every crew taking part. It all comes down to the small moments, the inches that define a championships and exist right through the fleet.
