The launch ceremony will be led by Lord- Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho, who will be naming the gig. The new gig, to be called Tregarthen’s, has been built by local island craftsman, Peter Martin and has taken six months to build.
The traditional ceremony will take place at Rackabite Slipway on St Mary’s at 11.45 am on 4th May. Canon Peter Walker and Reverend Charlie Gibbs will bless the gig at the ceremony.
Director Trevor Richards says: “Pilot gig racing is a treasured part of the heritage of the Isles of Scilly and we are committed to its future.”
Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Edward Bolitho, says: “it is great to see continued investment in the islands’ traditional sport and I am pleased that Tregarthen’s decided to ‘buy local’ and have a local craftsman build the new gig, helping support the local economy.”
Trevor adds: “With the Olympics, 2012 will be a big year for sport in the UK and in our own way we want to contribute to the future of sport on the islands and celebrate the islands’ unique sporting heritage.”
