Rock Rowing Club enjoyed glorious spring sunshine to host their annual Easter Bonnet Race on the Camel Estuary on Sunday 18th March. Thanks to the crews who came from Padstow, Port Isaac, Bude and Ilfracombe, with eight gigs racing in total in this fun opener to the season.
The women rowed first from Rock up to Wadebridge with the advantage of a following wind and incoming tide and then the men rowed back at high tide and having to push hard into a head wind.
Padstow took the honours in the women’s race in 34 minutes and 10 seconds, with Rock in second and Ilfracombe third.
In the men’s event Rock came first in 36 minutes with Padstow A second and Padstow B third. Fastest overall boat with the combined times from both legs was Swift from Rock. As well as the competition on the water, there was an impressive turnout of Easter Bonnets. Top prize went to Ilfracombe for an ingenious creation of a chick emerging from an egg. After all the hard work, welcome refreshments were provided at the sailing club. A good start to the season.
