Two days before the 2012 “3 Rivers Race” (an annual endurance torture test for the gig rowing fleet of about 6 miles visiting the entrances to 3 of the rivers feeding the Tamar), there was a forecast of winds of 40-60mph and heavy rain. It didn’t turn out quite that way, the rain pretty much held off and the wind speed was lower but still made for some epic sharp wind over tide chop for mile after mile. Controlling the boats on the downwind leg was a challenge for all crews.
To be honest, controlling the boats at any point was interesting. Starting procedure needs work but this was recognised by the organisers and some major revisions may be on the cards for the next time this (increasingly) popular race is run. The GigRower League has been updated with results from today from registered rowers that we could identify, feel free to send details of the boat you were in to firstname.lastname@example.org .
