Falmouth Gig Club Event: Saturday 11 June 2011

Venue : Gyllyngvase Beach Falmouth, Cliff Road, Falmouth TR11 4PA

Race Programme:

Coxes meeting: 10.00, first race: 10.30

Note: Clubs can enter more than one crew per race but will need a gig for each crew entered. “Repechage” heats are being run so that crews that don’t progress from their initial heat have a chance to race again and make it to the semi-finals. Therefore you’re guaranteed at least two races and up to four if you make your class final via the repechage route. The progression system will be announced on the day as it depends on the number of crews that enter your class.

Mens B Heats & Repechage
Womens B Heats & Repechage
Mens A Heats & Repechage
Womens A Heats & Repechage
Juniors
Vets (mixed crews i.e. 3 men and 3 women in each gig)
Mens B Semi-final & Finals
Womens B Semi-final & Final
Mens Semi-final & Final
Womens Semi-final & Final

Registration:

All gigs must go to the Rugby Ground first to register. From here, the dispatch of gigs will be managed. The entrance of the grounds is on the junction of Dracaena Ave (A39) and Killigrew Street see map below.

To ensure all boats are on the beach for the start of the race, clubs within a 15 mile radius of Falmouth should arrive between 8.00 and 8.45am and other clubs by 9.30am. Members of your club identified to help unload your boat should wear a high vis vest. FGC stewards will be around to help unload gigs. Time of arrival of gigs and crew must be coordinated.

In the past the police have managed traffic whilst unloading gigs, but they won’t be around this year. FGC has to manage its own event. This means that you must follow instructions from FGC members.

Note: Boats arriving at the beach by road without registering will be sent to the Rugby Club.

The route for gigs from the Rugby Club to Gyllyngvase beach is shown in the map below. Note that arrival onto the beach differs from the departure.

Crews should go straight to the beach and register at the Race Point . You are asked to travel by public transport (Falmouth Town Rail Station is highlighted), on foot, bicycle or rowing where possible. If you come by car, please use the public car parks highlighted on the map.

On the day

Food and drink will be provided by Gylly Cafe, there’ll be some family entertainment for the young ones and an area of the the beach will be open for swimming.

There is camping at the Rugby Club on Friday and Saturday night. There is a small charge. Please let us know if you wish to camp by contacting Vicki on 07815 935328 by Monday 6 June.

Thank-you Falmouth for a great day’s racing. Thank-you too for the lovely shiny cup! Sprints are a great addition to the race calender and hope you will do again next year. Other clubs should give it a go – we were able to give some members the taste of racing that might not normally have had the chance.

Enjoyable day yesterday. Thanks to all Falmouth members for good organisation getting gigs to and from the beach and help provided.
Only moan is why did the Men’s A final only have 6 gigs in it ?
Should have adopted same stance as Ladies A races and put 3rd place boats in to make up the 8.

Thanks for those comments Ali and Paul, glad you had a good day.

Paul, the only reason the numbers in the final were limited for the Mens A was because only 11 Mens A crews entered. It was the smallest field of crews so the final was made smaller rather that having over 50% of the crews entered making the final.
