As the font of all things Gig Rowing we thought we should update you regarding Clevedon PGC
Firstly our Website is www.clevedonpilotgigclub.co.uk
Our new Gig is being built by Win Cnoops at The Underfall Yard in Bristol, now approaching completion and due to be launched on Saturday March 5th at 13.00 hrs. All are welcome. After a voting competition from a shortlist of six names on the website, also involving local Schools, the gig will be named ‘Watch and Pray’, receiving some 24% of the votes. This is the translation of the Latin motto on the Clevedon Coat of Arms.
Subject to favourable weather conditions on Saturday March 12th, the Club plan to row their new gig from Bristol down the River Avon to Portishead and then on to Clevedon, a distance of about 14 n.miles, accompanied by two of the Bristol gigs and escort vessels. The date has been chosen as Clevedon probably has the finest Victorian Pier in the UK and the planned homecoming of the new gig coincides with National Pier Day, so should attract maximum Media coverage.
The Gig will be taken to Scilly for the World Championships in May. First established in February 2009 the Club is proud of its achievement in raising sufficient funds to build a new boat in such a short space of time and it has always been a target to take a boat to Scilly at the earliest opportunity. Several members will be joining their counterparts from the Bristol Gig Club in sharing accommodation on ‘The Matthew’ during its planned visit to St. Mary’s for the Big Weekend. The Club owe a great debt of gratitude to Bristol for all their help and advice in providing rowing training and experience over this past two years.
Keep up the good work.
