PAIGNTON Gig Regatta :: Report

PAIGNTON Gig Regatta attracted entries from six clubs; Caradon with ‘Mary Newman’, Cattewater with ‘Pilgrim’, Teign with ‘Teign Spirit’, Rame with ‘Penlee Point’, Dart with ‘Lightning’ and host club Paignton with ‘Top Catch’ and ‘Storm’.

A 3000 metre kite shaped course was laid out in Tor Bay starting and finishing between the Harbour and the Pier. Sea conditions were good with south westerly wind veering through westerly to north westerly during the race programme.

The first race of the day was the Men’s A race with four crews from Teign, Cattewater, Paignton and Caradon contesting. Cattewater led up the first leg followed by Caradon and Teign’s Graham Hill, Dave Johnson, Jon Haytread, Nigel Evans, Paul Walton, Simon Hounsell and cox, Rachel Holgate, third with Paignton’s Tony Bateman, Shaun Pedley, Tim Colliver, Jeff Wills, Mark Palk, Pete Scoble and cox, Ana de la Fuente, in fourth. Cattewater were first around the first marker from Caradon but Paignton slipped inside Teign to take third place. Caradon repeated the move on Cattewater at the third marker to take the lead. Caradon (14 minutes 36 seconds) went on to win by two and a half lengths from Cattewater (14:44) with Paignton (15:15) third and Teign (15:31) fourth.

This was followed by the Men’s B race between Caradon, Rame, Cattewater, Teign and two Paignton crews. Rame were quick off the start followed by Caradon and Cattewater. At the first mark Rame led by one and a half lengths from Caradon who were one length from Cattewater. Up the second leg Caradon caught Rame and rowed through them to lead to the finish. Caradon (14:52) finished two and a half lengths ahead of Rame (15:01) who were two and a half lengths from Cattewater (15:16). Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ (15:45) crew of Paul Tucker, Lee Marshall, Ade Jones, Tim Porosa, Matt Scoble, Dean Farrell and cox, Amy Plowman, were fourth with Teign’s (16:14) Ian Donohue, Simon Hounsell, Henry Trett, Dave Johnson, Graham Hill, Mike Izzard and cox, Lisa Pash, fifth and Paignton’s ‘Storm’ (16:53) sixth.

The Ladies A race included Caradon, Rame, Teign, Paignton and Cattewater. Cattewater and Caradon made the running off the start and up to the first mark with Paignton’s Amy Plowman, Ana de la Fuente, Gill Knight, Helen French, Sarah Tingle, Tracey Western and cox, Shaun Pedley, in third place. Cattewater were around first but Caradon went up the inside of them on the second leg to round the second marker in front. Paignton had beaten Teign’s Rachel Holgate, Sue Heath, Sarah Free, Kelly Inness, Jo Haydon, Jane Avery and cox, John Holgate, to the first mark to hold onto third place but Teign went inside them on the third mark to take third place. Caradon (16:01) went onto win by two and a half lengths from Cattewater (16:12) who were six lengths from third placed Teign (16:37). Paignton (16:44) were fourth and Rame (17:38) fifth.

The Ladies B race had the largest entry with Rame, Teign, Cattewater, Caradon, Dart and two Paignton crews. Teign’s Amanda Dyer, Jacky Forte, Sharon Sanger, Catherine Lovell, Lisa Pash, Donna Bell and cox, Paul Walton, and Caradon made the running down the first leg and at the first mark Caradon were a length up on Teign which they extended down the second leg. Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ crew of Alyson Whitehead, Helen Burns, Grace Panter, Queenie Martin, Jo Drury, Gill Hill and cox, Lee Marshall, were third at the first mark with Dart’s Maggie Trubshaw, Clare Thorp, Lyn Lloyd, Debbie Gillard, Karen Marshall, Jane Naish and cox, Dave Morralley, close but Dart rowed through Paignton on the second leg. Positions were unchanged through the third and final legs. Caradon (16:43) were six length winners from Teign (17:21) who were six lengths from Dart (17:45). Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ (18:06) was fourth, Rame (18:22) fifth, Cattewater (19:37) sixth and Paignton’s ‘Storm’ (22:32) crew of Wendy Tooley, Kath Dodd, Kirsten Pullen, Sarah Siddall, Denise Stickley, Louise Lewis and cox, Pete Scoble, seventh.

The Ladies C race was just between Caradon and Teign’s Sue Thulborn, Sandra McCord, Sarah Cox, Jane Avery, Lisa Pash, Kelly Inness and cox, Simon Hounsell. The two crews were fairly even down the first leg but Teign were first at the first mark leading Caradon by a length. Teign (17:22) went on to win by three lengths from Caradon (18:04).

The Under 16 race rowed over just the final leg of about 750 metres received entries from Cattewater, Rame, Caradon and Paignton. All four crews got away to a good start and were fairly even. Caradon (5:31) pulled out to lead followed by Rame and went onto win by four lengths from Rame (5:42) who were three lengths from third placed Cattewater (6:39) with Paignton’s (6:39) Laura Tucker, Lewis Bailey, Joel Pearson, Georgina Jones, Rachael Tucker, Nicole Veale  and cox, Sandra Pedley, fourth.

The Men’s Veterans race was between Rame, Caradon, Cattewater, Teign and two Paignton crews. Teign’s Jon Haytread, Mike Izzard, Graham Hill, Simon Hounsell, Paul Walton, Nigel Evans and cox, Lisa Pash, and Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ crew of Alyson Whitehead, Helen Burns, Grace Panter, Queenie Martin, Jo Drury, Gill Hill and cox, Lee Marshall, led down to the first mark. Paignton got around first and went out to a two lengths lead up the second leg. There was a tremendous battle for third place between Caradon, Rame and Cattewater. Rame lost out in the tussle on the second marker. Paignton (15:38) pressed on around the course to win by two and a half lengths from Teign (15:45). These two crews were a distance ahead of third placed Cattewater (16.10) with Caradon (16:12) fourth, Rame (16:46) fifth and Paignton’s ‘Storm’ (17:32) crew of Matt (Bridport), Francis (St. Ives), Paul (Dart), John (Charlestown), Dave (Dart), Pete Scoble and cox, Dean Farrell, sixth. Cattewater were subsequently disqualified for racing a mixed crew.

Dart, Teign, Rame and two Paignton crews contested the Ladies Veterans race. Teign’s Amanda Dyer, Jacky Forte, Rachel Holgate, Catherine Lovell, Jo Haydon, Sue Heath and cox, Paul Walton, led down the first leg followed by Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ crew of Alyson Whitehead, Amy Plowman, Gill Knight, Queenie Martin, Sarah Tingle, Tracey Western and cox, Dean Farrell, and Dart’s Maggie Trubshaw, Clare Thorp, Lyn Lloyd, Debbie Gillard, Karen Marshall, Jane Naish and cox, Dave Morralley. Teign (17:00) maintained a length lead to the third mark and then pulled away down the final leg to win by three lengths from Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ (17:14) with Dart (18:09) third. Rame (18:49) were fourth and Paignton’s ‘Storm’ (22:59) crew of Jo Drury, Michelle (Bridgport), Denise Stickley, Sue (Bristol), Wendy Tooley, Tracie Marshall and cox, Mark Palk, fifth.

The final race of the day was the Mixed race with Teign, Dart, Cattewater and two Paignton crews. Cattewater and Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ crew of Ana de la Fuente, Helen French, Mark Palk, Shaun Pedley, Alex Pedley, Gill Hill and cox, Amy Plowman, got away well  but by the first mark Cattewater had a three length lead. Teign’s Sandra McCord, Henry Trett, Graham Hill, Simon Hounsell, Sharon Sanger, Donna Bell and cox, Rachel Holgate, slipped past Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ at the first mark. Cattewater continued to extend their lead and Teign eventually overcame the chasing Paignton ‘Top Catch’ crew. Cattewater (15:29) won by a distance from Teign (16:27) who were four lengths from Paignton’s ‘Top Catch’ (16:38). Paignton’s ‘Storm’ (17:43) crew of Grace Panter, Dean Farrell, Matt Scoble, Tim Porosa, Gill Knight, Shaz McCarthy and cox, Tony Bateman, were fourth and Dart (18:09) fifth.
