Mixed & Vets Pilot Gig Racing 2009

:: Live(ish) updates ::

19:37 That’ll teach me to try to post regular updates whilst trying to cox occasionally and keep an eye on what’s going on at the event. A beautiful days racing, well done Caradon GC, sadly damp at the end when putting boats away. As for results – provisionally…(from a slightly jaded rowving reporter).

DSC04388

14:00 Very fast for most crews to the first mark with plenty of wind and tide behind. The leg home back along the western shore sorts the crews out.

10:23 Racing is well underway in the slightly grey conditions. Clear weather is on its way from the west but at the moment an almighty rainstorm is upon us! Lots of people crammed under shaky looking gazebos.

10:15 Mixed crews completes the course in around 11 minues.

09:15 First race starts. About 12 minutes to complete the 3 mark course.

The CPGA Mixed & Veterans Championships on Saturday 4th July 2009 is another major event on the racing calendar with a record 128 crews entered this year, a testament to just how popular the sport of gig rowing is. GigRower will be attending and will try to post a rolling report of the day online as it happens.

The Championships will be run from Jubilee Green, as last year and will coincide with the Saltash Town Regatta and Waterside Festival, so there will be plenty to keep you occupied between races, including a craft fair, continental market and children’s entertainment. If you are intending to stay overnight on the Friday or Saturday, camping and B&B details have already been sent out to clubs and are also available via the CPGA website. On Saturday evening there will be a live band playing in the Saltash Sailing Club and a BBQ, so you can enjoy a few beers after a hard days racing!

If you intend staying overnight and would like to enjoy a few drinks after the racing, please let Caradon Gig Club know either by email prior to the event, or on the day and we will arrange transport to take you back to the campsite later on the Saturday evening.

Please note that only two cars per Club will be able to park in the Jubilee Green car park. Other car parks are detailed on the Park & Ride map, also enclosed, as well as a map giving directions to Jubilee Green.

If your Club is lending a gig for the Championships, please can you ensure that they are at Jubilee Green by 8 a.m. latest on the morning of Saturday 4th July. If you wish to bring your gig up on Friday night, it can be stored in the Jubilee Green Car Park, where there will be a Security Guard on patrol all night.

The coxes meeting will take place at 8.30 a.m., with the first race starting at 9.00 a.m. prompt.

There are a total of 128 crews entered into the Mixed & Veterans Championships this year and therefore, races will be started promptly at 8 minute intervals. If you are not on the water for your heat/race, the starter will not wait for you. The organisers would very much appreciate your co-operation with us in this regard, to ensure that the event runs as smoothly and as timely as possible. Please note that due to the way the races are run, we advise that you do not have the same people rowing or coxing in more than one category. You can use a different cox through the event if necessary, but the rowers in each crew must remain the same.

:: Invite :: (entries for 2009 closed)

Hosted by Caradon Gig Club on Saturday 4th July 2009.

The event will be run from Jubilee Green and we will be racing up river (towards the Tavy).  Jubilee Green provides a fantastic vantage point for the racing and enables us to have quick changeovers.  The Championships will, once again, coincide with the Saltash Town Regatta, so there will be plenty to keep you occupied in between races.

The coxswains meeting will be at 8.30am and the first race will start at 9 a.m. prompt.  As you will know from previous years there are a lot of races to get though in one day, therefore we ask you to get out on the water as quickly as possible, and to note that crews not on the start line in time will be disqualified.  We hope to run the final at 6.00pm with the prize giving at 6.30pm.

Categories for the Championships:

Mens Veterans, Ladies Veterans, Mixed Veterans (3 and 3), Ladies Super Vets, Mens Super Vets, Mixed Super Vets (3 and 3), Mixed (3 and 3)

Please complete the entry form, to be returned by Friday 12th June 2009 by post with a returnable deposit cheque made payable to the CPGA for £50 per crew entered. No entries will be accepted via email or on the beach and any entries received after this date will not be accepted.  Deposits will only be returned to those crews who compete on the day.  The CPGA website will be updated daily with the list of entries received.

Once you have registered your crews and your deposit(s) have been received, you will be sent a pack containing information on parking, the course, race format, apr√®s racing entertainment and more.¬† Unfortunately we are unable to provide camping facilities, but we have enclosed details of nearby campsites and B&B’s. The road leading down to the waterside will be closed, therefore parking will be limited to 2 vehicles per club (in the waterside car park).¬† A park and ride system will be in place to get the rest of you down to the river.

For those who haven’t done this event before, the mixed and vets runs like the County Championships in that we will use a pool of boats.¬† We usually have four groups of boats, and races are set off at 8 minute intervals. No races are timed, usual progression through each round will be the first 1, 2 or 3 across the line, depending on the number of crews entered in each category.¬† As we have so many races to get through in one day (in 2008 this was 96 races!) categories do overlap so we advise that your rowers / coxes do not row or cox in more than one category, as we can’t keep all categories separate right the way through the day.

We are working extremely hard to make this a successful and well run event, and we hope that you will be able to join us in some fantastic racing -and the après racing of course!

I would just like to say a very big THANK-YOU to all who worked so hard yesterday, it was a very well run event.

  2. John Ryan

Great photos of the Caradon Mixed and Vets…unfortunately not many pictures included of the crews from the “smaller” clubs!

  3. Rower

Totally agree with John Ryan…. Great well organised event but after trawling through 390 photos of Caradon, Falmouth etc etc…. there were alot of clubs who also made the journey attended and drew blood sweat and tears and also won races or did very well in heats but seems to be lacking in action shots…… Unless you have not downloaded them yet Caradon??? – That is my only detromental comment regarding the whole event as Caradon worked hard on that day and thanks to the pontoon guys and umpires – not an easy task!!

  4. Mike

Why were crews allowed to use replacements during the championships. I thought the rules stated you could change cox’s but not crew members.
Did any of the crews who used replacements win a trophy our worse still beat another crew to a place in the any of the finals.
I know we all like to win, but we should all row by the rules.

  5. Nicky

Mike – we weren’t aware of any crews making changes.
John Ryan & Rower – John (who took the photos) does so as a hobby and can take photos of whoever he likes. He does his best to get photos of all crews but can only do so when there is a boat available to follow the races – with 62 races in one day and 128 crews surely he can’t be expected to get shots of every single crew???

  6. Mike

Nicky, it wasn’t a critisism of the organisers. Just the Clubs that feel they have got to bend the rules, as they put it, or cheat, as I would say, to win.
The rules you sent everybody were very clear, no changing of Crews, if clubs do not understand that then, whats the point in having rules.
Unfortunately I could’nt make it on Saturday, all the reports from our rowers were that it was a very well run regatta, well done all involved.

  7. kim (Helford)

Great day , thank you, it was a fantastic atmosphere and seemed to me to run like clockwork, everyone worked really hard including all those lovely ladies with the cakes and teas to keep us going. Thank you for the photos too, see you next year.

  8. Lynn

Thank you very much for a great days rowing…. The whole day went very smoothly and Caradon you ALL worked so hard to make the days transition seamless….. Weymouth had a great day and sorry you are now unable to make our event…. Best Wishes Weymouth Rowing Club
